IBM Lotus Symphony Beta 1.0 is an excellent and free office application created by IBM themselves that tries to compete directly with Microsoft´s MS Office. It includes a text processor, a database and a multimedia presentation tool.
The application is based on the Open Document Format (ODF) that has many advantages because the user isn´t blocked with updates, licences, contracts, etc of an owner who has total control. This is because it is free access - everyone who uses it can modify it according to their needs.
Thus you can use Lotus to create simple work documents, cards, summaries, but also more complicated documents like bibliographies, reference tables, indexes, etc.
